Hi students!!
As you may know, some activities have been organized
in Villanueva de Gállego for a Cultural Week in relation to a Linguistic
Project for the Promotion of Foreign Languages which has been implemented this
year. Therefore, our students have learnt more about the British Culture in the
19th century, and, more in particular, about one of its most
important colonies which was India .
2nd Year ESO students have performed a play based on
Rudyard Kipling's Jungle Book. Firstly, the students made a puppet with their
teacher Layla Al-kerdi and then they learnt their roles in English. In addition, they rehearsed in the lessons and
learnt a choreography with the help of Silvia Coscolín. Finally, they performed the play and sang some
famous songs which appeared on the soundtrack to Kindergarten students.
The Kindergarten students also gave them a medal as a
reward for their effort.
4th Year ESO Students have carried out a research on the
British Culture in the XIXth century and in India. As a result, they had known
that life was transformed by the Industrial Revolution during the 19th
century. One task which they had to prepare was a mind map with the help of
Cmap tools and they also had to create a timeline of the period with their
teacher Antonio Martes in the History lessons.
Moreover, they have learnt about some of contributions
made by Indian mathematicians such as the introduction of decimal system as
well as the invention of zero by Brahmagupta in the maths lessons with Adolfo
Sancho. In Civics lesson, they acquire some more knowledge about Indian
philosophy with Arancha Moliné, who explained them the insights of Mahatma
Gandhi’ s life, work and philosophy. One of
his most well-known quotes was
Live as
if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever.
Apart from this, they learnt that the
Victorian era was a period of change and technological innovation that brought
Britain to its highest point of development as a world power. In relation to
literature, they analysed the rise of the Victorian novel and they read Rudyard
Kipling’s Kim which is set in India. The novel is notable for its detailed portrait
of the people, culture, and varied religions of India.
Finally, they prepared a PowerPoint Presentation and
made some posters in teams. They explained their partners what they have found
out about the Victorian period in different areas of knowledge and about India.
All the students with their tutors have watched films
in English which were associated with Indian culture such as Slumdog Millionaire and Bend it like Beckham. Consequently, they
have analyzed some Indian traditions.
Another activity which was planned was a nonprofit
market, and on Thursday 30th April, it was organized so as to know more about
the current problems in India and how India is helped by Intermon Oxfam. Thanks
to our students and teachers we could raise some money for this NGO.
Finally, there was an exhibition with displays from students of 2nd, 3rd and 4th Year ESO at Centro Cívico in Villanueva on Monday 4th May.
I do appreciate all your effort and participation in the activities and I thank you for all your involvement in the project.
